The Soul of Colombia

The Soul of Colombia

A Magdalena River journey with AmaWaterways reveals the country’s culture, craftsmanship, and vibrant natural world.

AmaWaterways is charting a new course in Colombia with journeys that celebrate the region’s culture, honor local traditions, and reveal rare wildlife. These voyages along the Magdalena River—dubbed the “River of Life” by writer Gabriel García Márquez—trace the region’s rich Indigenous, Spanish, and African heritage, winding through protected wetlands teeming with 400 bird species, howler monkeys, pink river dolphins, and American crocodiles.

Onboard, Colombian designers and artisans have helped shape the newly designed AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia ships, infusing each space with the country’s distinctive style and spirit. With a maximum of 64 guests, the journeys are intimate and immersive, bringing guests into family homes, artisan workshops, and spirited music and dance performances. Here, we share a peek at what’s in store on the seven-night itineraries for 2026 and 2027.

The History

Every step in Colombia tells a story, where centuries of art, resilience, and cultural exchange are woven into its streets, architecture, and traditions. Cartagena’s Getsemaní neighborhood, for one, showcases vibrant street art, colorful homes, and local dishes that reflect Colombia’s cultural heritage. In San Basilio de Palenque—founded by escaped slaves in 1630 and recognized by UNESCO as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”—residents share traditions through music, dance, and storytelling. At the entrance to the Canal del Dique in Calamar, colonial landmarks such as the Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción can be studied. And Mompox, a 16th-century trading hub, is a trove of preserved architecture, colonial churches, and age-old craftsmanship.

The Nature

The Magdalena River winds through diverse ecosystems that range from dry forests and rainforests to swamps and wetlands, hosting a rich array of flora and fauna. Guests might spot endangered species including the Magdalena spider monkey and river turtle, as well as rare birds such as the sapphire-bellied hummingbird and the Northern screamer, as well as eagles and tinamou. Observing these habitats from small excursion boats reveals Colombia’s extraordinary biodiversity and the vital role of its waterways in sustaining wildlife.

The Craftsmanship

Colombia’s enduring artistry spirit shines through its towns, where time-honored techniques and meticulous craftsmanship continue to shape daily life. Mompox is renowned for intricate filigree jewelry in gold and silver. Founded in 1540, the town became a key Spanish trading post and a safe haven for gold and treasures from pirates along the Caribbean coast. In Santa Barbara de Pinto, along the Mompox arm of the Magdalena River, fishing net weavers and tobacco rollers teach their crafts, while visitors can also explore pastel-toned streets and shop for artisanal wares.

The Song & Dance

Music is the heartbeat of Colombia, infusing every celebration and community with rhythms that tell the nation’s story of joy, resilience, and cultural fusion. These sounds pulse through Palenque, where cumbia and vallenato music reflect African, Indigenous, and European influences. In Barranquilla, AmaWaterways presents a private Carnaval celebration, replicating the city’s iconic UNESCO-recognized festival, where guests experience the energy and movement of the traditional festivities. Quien lo vive, es quien lo goza is Carnaval’s motto, which translates to, “The one who lives it, is the one who enjoys it.”

Revel in moments that last a lifetime with AmaWaterways.
