History Meets Sustainability
Palazzo Cordusio, a Gran Meliá Hotel is a study in rich heritage and sustainable renovation.
Named “the most sustainable hotel company worldwide” by a recent S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment, Meliá Hotels International practices an earth-first philosophy across all of its luxury properties, including Gran Meliá’s Milan debut: Palazzo Cordusio, a Gran Meliá Hotel.
The company ensured the renovation of Palazzo Cordusio—a building originally conceived by Italian architect Luca Beltrami in the 19th century—was as environmentally responsible as possible, putting sustainable construction at the heart of the meticulous refurbishment. After all, turning a storied masterpiece into a luxury boutique hotel was no small feat. Formerly a majestic palace, Meliá Hotels International took care to ensure the historical façade was preserved and locally sourced materials were used, weaving the natural environment throughout the 84 rooms and suites. The result: a sustainably focused gem that blends unrivaled luxury with captivating heritage.
“Before the project even began, Palazzo Cordusio’s design was carefully considered to minimize the environmental impact and create an efficiently elegant place for rest.”
Before the project even began, Palazzo Cordusio’s design was carefully considered to minimize the environmental impact and create an efficiently elegant place for rest. Still, sustainable construction was just the start, as Meliá Hotels International aligns its properties with several planet-friendly programs.
Energy efficiency. In accordance with the Paris Agreement and in step with scientific criteria, Meliá Hotels International has implemented innovative technology and green energy initiatives across its properties to significantly reduce emissions.
Water conservation. Water and climate change are inextricably linked. According to the United Nations, nearly two billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water and roughly half of the world’s population experiences severe water scarcity for at least part of the year. In response, Meliá Hotels International actively invests in ways to reduce water consumption at its hotels, including environmental management systems that monitor water use.
Reduce, reuse, recycle. Meliá Hotels International embraces a circular production and consumption model, which encourages a more responsible use of resources, the reduction of waste, and increased recycling. This includes eliminating single-use plastics, reducing food waste, and identifying opportunities to reuse products.
Protecting the natural environment. No matter where a hotel is located, preserving its surrounding natural environment is paramount. That said, Meliá Hotels International takes steps to conserve local fauna and wildlife and is committed to landscaping with native plants and flowers.
